First you’ll need to get your hands on a Hook and some Iron Chains. You’ve built your home and constructed sprawling tunnels below the surface, but how exactly do you get from A-to-B easily? You’ll need the Grappling Hook, but unlike many of Terraria’s tools, this one isn’t provided by default. However, as you begin to craft labyrinthine tunnels, you’ll need a grappling hook to avoid getting stuck far away from home.
TERRARIA PICKAXE UPGRADE
You’ll begin the game with a trusty Copper Axe - a rudimentary tool that will help you harvest enough wood to begin building your very first shack. Much like other tools though, you’ll soon want something with a bit more oomph, and an upgrade to an Iron, Silver or Gold axe will improve speed and power. Whilst the Hammer is greatly important when it comes to building a happy home, you won’t get far without an ample supply of wood. Thankfully there’s no shortage of Trees spanning the world of Terraria, and with the help of the Axe you’ll be ready to start hoarding lumber to craft a new home. While a sturdy pickaxe will take you to new depths, other tools are more essential when it comes to putting a roof over your head. Take the hammer, an important tool when crafting and reshaping homes and other structures. Used to dismantle walls and furniture, the hammer also serves as a handy secondary weapon. You’ll quickly want to upgrade, and ten bars of Iron, Silver or Gold will transform your rusty copper hammer into a brand new tool. Simply head to an anvil and you’ll be ready to hammer in the morning, in the evening, and if need be, all over this world. As Terraria’s most essential tool, you’ll want to upgrade as soon as possible. Once you’ve found enough Iron, Silver or Gold, head over to an anvil to craft an upgraded pickaxe.

Perhaps the most essential of Terraria’s world shaping tools, you’ll spend much of your time swinging the pickaxe. Used to mine the majority of terrain blocks, the Pickaxe is used to collect different rocks such as stones and ores, required to build bricks, walls and other essential items. Along with this, the pickaxe allows you to venture underground, eventually crafting elaborate tunnels. It’s below the surface that many of Terraria’s hidden secrets can be found, and you’ll soon discover treasure chests, hellish enemies and valuable metallic ores. Here’s our handy step by step guide to the items you’ll need in your Terraria tool belt.
